Using salt to create a feathery effect

One of my favorite effects to do with watercolor comes from a very familiar kitchen ingredient: regular table salt. The dissolved salts can create beautiful fractal like designs, reminiscent of snowflakes. Indeed, no one effect is the same, they are all unique. There are two ways to go achieve this effect. One way is to place the salt on the desired places and add the water later, soaking up the excess water with a napkin. This way offers more control and reduces mistakes. The other way is to add the salt when the paper is still wet. This method is more chaotic in a sense because if a speck of salt accidentally falls in the wrong place, it will dissolve instantly. Sometimes, this can create spontaneous pretty art, other times, it ruins the painting.

As shown below, the areas with more salt are the whiter areas. Usually, the spot where the salt speck lands is the whitest since there are a greater concentration of salt molecules.
