Cross hatching

Cross hatching is achieved through making straight lines over and over again. It is a form of blending that is not as smooth and creates miniscule pockets of solid colors, if one were to examine it up close. From far away, the pockets are not as apparent, and the effect is something like that of a mosaic. Cross hatching is used to create a textured effect, because the blending is not as smooth, it looks grainy and rough. Blending through the shading technique is more softer and smoother. Cross hatching is ideal for coloring objects like rocks, dirt, or sand, because their surfaces are irregular and jagged.
